I would go with either Sun, HP or IBM as they are the first-tier
platforms i.e. the ones ported to first. Personally I like Suns since
they work first time and are very fast.
Dual 170Mhz Sun Ultraspar with 14x2Gb RAID array + DLT 4000 tape
drive. 20Gb tapes eah (40Gb compressed) + ontape archives 56Mb in 14
seconds i.e. 14.4Gb/hr!
Amazingly fast for 4GL compilations (1000 files + 100 library modules)
in 1hr (only using one CPU as a single makefile!).
Reminds me, must put GNU make on their and do parallel makes!!
Also one a single CPU machine (Sun 170Mhz Ultrasparc) running Online
5.x we loaded 500Mb of data in 1/2 hour (including index creation)
and archived it in ~15 minutes...
Crispy!
