Question: UPDATE STATISTICS and CPU usage

While running UPDATE STATISTICS HIGH FOR table (colname) on a big table we have the effect that nobody can connect to the informix engine anymore (no matter to which database). We are running Informix 7.23 on a single processor HP machine. It seems that it is not a locking problem. Could it be that the Update Statistics statement uses up all the CPU power? Has anybody had similar experiences and had found a solution to the problem? Thanks for your help, GW
