RE: Whither Informix?
Posted in 2006
Not a technical problem thread: it's a marketing/strategy debate about whether IBM promotes Informix to the wider public. Participants note IBM's general advertising (e.g. "Information on Demand") rarely targets specific databases, and that Informix news is absent from IBM's weekly announcement and software newsletters. One poster argued IBM spends nothing on Informix beyond what the installed base generates, with marketing dollars effectively zero; an IBM-side/consultant reply countered that the Informix development budget is significant and growing. The exchange ends in disagreement, with no resolution or conclusion recorded.

Yes, you are right, he's asking about public blitz. But I have a question.... .does IBM really blitz that way? Yes, they market "information on demand" .... I see the commercials and print ads..... but I don't know if I can say I specifically see television commercials about DB2 outside of tech related stuff. So are we asking for something for informix that IBM just doesn't do in general? .... I will duck for the tomatoe throwing now.... :) -----Original Message----- From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Captain Pedantic Sent: Friday, October 27, 2006 1:03 PM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Re: Whither Informix? No tomatoes! :-) I get an email every week from IBM called "IBM iSource -- U.S. Announcements" using the email_address info@isource.ibm.com In that email is a URL for all kinds of announcements under Hardware, Software, Marketing, Services, Withdrawals, and a summary: http://www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/fcgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUSC06-050 == I get another email every week from IBM called the IBM Software Newsletter, using the email_address swnews@ibm.delivery.net It has Features, New offers, Innovations and a bunch of information on new software: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/info/newsletter/latest.html == So the big question is, who dropped the ball? Why isn't Informix news in any of these newsletters or online references???????????????????????????????????? If one pays attention to what IBM does ... rather than what IBM says. Then it is remarkably clear that not one dollar, beyond what Informix brings in from the current installed base, will be spent on the product. -- Daniel A. There is a significant and steadily increasing dev budget for the Informix product set. I didn't say they wouldn't spend money. I said they wouldn't spend money beyond that brought in by the current installed base. This is no difference from Oracle and RDB which has been around for a very long time too. Development continues. Marketing dollars do not exist. -- Daniel A. Hey now! Don't pester these guys with facts. These threads are for ranting only.
