The following thought is strictly my free-associating on a somewhat uninspired Friday, so treat it accordingly... I wonder whether one can get anywhere by messing about with the environment variables COLLCHAR and/or LC_COLLCHAR? Can we use these to tell the engine that we want to consider the alphabet to be sequenced like this: "AaBbCcDdEeFfGgHhIi.....Zz" instead of like this: "ABCDEFGHI....Zabcdefghi....z" And if we could persuade the engine to accept this, would it not give us case-insensitive ORDER BY? I've never used COLLCHAR or LC_COLLCHAR but they do appear to be about this sort of thing. - Paul
