RE: How to start Informix online at boot time?

Woah - I'm not saying that automagically turning on your instance is a bad
thing. We did it back at HP quite successfully for years. We had a nice
script which went out and read a standard list of engines to start and then
looped through starting each instance (and back then it's IStar). This
worked remarkably.
However, on a project not too very long ago we developed with a beta
release of the database and a set of sysadmins who didn't seem to be able
to keep the platform up and running for more than 3 weeks consecutively.
This was a VLDB situation, every time we came back up 'we' had to worry
about what damage had been done and correcting that damage. The recovery
feature of Informix is invaluable, but if something with the underlying
hardware is wrong it can dig itself a hole. In this circumstance it was
appropriate to NOT start the engine automatically during the boot process.
Perhaps I erred in ascribing an 'always' situation to the Master Ford. I
pointed it out so that you could take your environment into consideration
before automagically booting your instance.
cheers

Subject: RE: How to start Informix online at boot time?
I've been starting Informix online at boot time for over a year without
a problem on HP-UX 10.10 with Informix Online 7.13. I have done it 2
ways. The simplest way is to run oninit as root at the end of the
/sbin/rc file. Of course, all the appropriate environment variables
will need to before oninit is executed. The second way, which is more
in line with the proper way to do it, was thru the UNIX startup
scripts(ie. the /sbin/init.d, /etc/rc.config.d, /sbin/rc#.d). But I
would put it at the end of the startup sequence at /sbin/rc4.d vice
/sbin/rc2.d, since I want the HP-UX to start all UNIX OS processes first
before the Informix goes online. Again, don't forget to ensure all
environment variables have been exported.
Good luck!
Jim
