SQLCODE and SELECT ... INTO TEMP

Does anybody know a way to find out whether a SELECT ... INTO TEMP TmpTable actually inserted a row or not without doing an explicit SELECT COUNT(*) FROM TmpTable? SQLCODE and SQLSTATE contain always 0 even if there was no row inserted in the temporay table. Thanks for your help, GW
