It happened within ISQL commands as well as when running 4GL applications, at seemingly unrelated points. We called tech support (Siemens Nixdorf in Germany, we use their OEM Version of Informix on their machines) and they told us that it was a symptom of corrupted system tables. Version 4.1 does a lot stricter checking on this than 2.1, so the problem never showed up before. The solution was to export the database, drop it, recreate it and re-import. We never ran into the problem again.
