First, you can change LTAPEDEV for a running engine in online mode you
just have to do it from onmonitor you cannot do it in the onconfig file
directly. That does not however solve the logging problem any online
rebuild, whether ALTER FRAGMENT or ALTER INDEX TO CLUSTER will create
a mass of log entries. Can't you add several logical logs temporarily
and drop them later when the rebuild is complete? Second, there should
be no "holes" if the dbspace is truly dedicated to the one table unless
you also have detached indexes on that table in the same dbspace?
Otherwise you should have only one extent per chunk. What does
oncheck -pT report about the table?
I suspect you are getting yourself worked up over nothing.
