RE: Question for Sun experts

My friendly Sun person has given the following answers: 1. Statistics show (SpecINT, SpecFP) that the SUN processor is almost twice the speed at the physical processor layer. Adding to that the operating system, the calculation cannot be made due to unknown variables. 2. The choice between the E450 and E3000 is a matter of scalability and price. The benchmarks of both machines are similar although the scaling of the X500 series is more so than that of the 450. The 450 has benefits of being rackable, lower initial investment, lower maintenance & support and enclosed in a single box. Feature Summary: E450 E3500 CPU's 1-4 1-8 Memory 128 - 4gb 256 - 8gb Max int. disk 180gb hot plug 145.6gb Regarding 3, I have no information. We are still using Solaris 2.6. One of our clients insists on having a Sun server. They are horrified at the idea of PCs as servers. We have no experience of Informix on Sun, so here are a few questions: The application is mainly OLTP during the day with around 200 users. At night, there is a hughe batch run, written completely in stored procedures. 1. How does an UltraSparc II 400MHz compares with a Pentium III Xeon 500MHz. I know they are better, but would a Dual UltraSparc replace a Quad Pentium? 2. We have to choose between the Workgroup Servers (450) and the Entreprise Servers (3000). I assume the entreprise are faster machines, but the processors are the same. Will a typical database application see much better performance in an Entreprise server? 3. Is Informix 7.31 stable on Solaris 7, or is it better to stick to an older Solaris. Thanks for any help.
