I believe 4GL works off the SHELL environment variable at runtime which is set by default to the user's /etc/passwd entry. It would be the cause of your problems if your users have a nonstandard initial shell. We ourselves reset the SHELL var in the embedded RUN commands in our code to prevent users from escaping to the shell, or to force a C-shell onto a Bourne shell user, or whatever. You can either write a setenv-like external function to be called from inside your 4GL code or, more simply, set SHELL before you execute your 4GL program. Van
