RE: create a DB on Linux
Posted in 2006
A newcomer who had just installed Informix Dynamic Server on Linux asked how to create a database. Instead of instructions, the thread turned into a flame war about "RTFM"/"just Google it" responses versus being welcoming to beginners, with some arguing the hostility drives away new Informix users and others refusing to apologise. The only pointers given were a general Google search leading to online Informix docs (docs.rinet.ru chapter on CREATE DATABASE) and the IIUG FAQ at www.iiug.org; no actual step-by-step answer or resolution is recorded.

Not really, just weary of people who seem unable to google for 5 mins to locate documentation and spend an hour or so reading it to discover for themselves how to do things. That's what makes life so interesting, investigation and discovery, otherwise we may just as well hand over to the chimps and go home (mind you, I think they've already taken over in many places !!). Just another symptom of society today:- give it to me .. give it to me now .. give it to me now, and free .. give it to me now, and free, and provide me with lifetime technical support, and upgrades, and enhancements, and let me produce applications, and make money and I still won't pay you anything, but will sue it anything goes wrong. And no, I don't work for 1BM or 0racle or Micr0s0ft or any other IT Business. Hi Perhaps you are bored of easy questions. But everyone has to beguin at some point. You have probably worked a lot with Informix so you think this is a stupid question. I only thought it was an easy question, that wouldn't hurt anybody, and if someone could help me with that I could spend more time with the difficult things. Thanx

I'm completely unrepentant, if that was aimed at me. http://www.justfuckinggoogleit.com/ -- Bye now, Obnoxio "C'est pas parce qu'on n'a rien ' dire qu'il faut fermer sa gueule" - Coluche did i mention i like nulls? heck, i even go so far as to say that all columns in a table except the primary key could/should be nullable. this has certain advantages, for example, if you need to insert a child record and you don't have a parent row for it, just do an insert into the parent table with the primary key value (everything else null), and voila, relational integrity is preserved. but this is, admittedly, a bit controversial among modellers. --r937, dbforums.com
I spend more time observing this forum than contributing, but I think I need to straddle the fence on this one. I do find it ridiculous that someone can ask such a basic question in this forum. A simple answer is expected when one doesn't exist. Is the database to be logged? What dbspace should be the default? There's probably a dozen more considerations to be made before creating a database. Of course most answers will be found in TFM. Now to the other side of the fence. I attended user forum in Atlanta in December. I can comfirm from the attendance that very few people under 30 were present. This also has been the focus of recent postings in this forum. How can we as Informix loyalists expect to recruit new initiates when we treat the newbies with such contempt? If I was "ch", this would be the first and last contact I ever made with this supposedly esteemed group. >From: "ch" <anmacri@mixmail.com> >To: informix-list@iiug.org >Subject: Re: create a DB on Linux >Date: 7 Feb 2006 09:07:14 -0800 > >Hi >Perhaps you are bored of easy questions. It's almost like it's ok to say that, and then be good-natured as if it's acceptable behavior. It really isn't nice, and a lot of the noobs don't have English as a first language, so maybe cut 'em some slack. BTW I still don't know why any Informix developer programs don't even try to lock-step with what is happening out in the real world, with Eclipse, MySQL, etc. There are so many opportunities lost... sad, so sad. Standard Engine is still better in many ways than MySQL, but you would never know it in the press or at ibm.com.
