Re: AN INFORMIX WISH LIST - DRAFT - NOT FINAL TILL JULY 18, 1997

A few more wishes. Oh so many things in 4GL. Lots of fixed values made variables. Windows that can be written to "underneath" others in 4GL. Fewer bugs. Some decent string manipulation functions in SQL, SPL and 4GL. By decent I mean better than C. More like Snobol or old Honeywell tex. Even SQl-92 would be an improvement. (I gather CASE is coming but it's not for strings!) 4GL fields than can abut other fields and text, ie get rid of the [] delimiters in the screen section. Scrolling forms in 4GL. When you go off the edge, the form scrolls. Should help the poor unfortunates who have terminals with 24 and 25 lines to cater for. Positionable INPUT and DISPLAY ARRAY statements in 4GL, so you can move the cursor and array around under programmatic control. Array members not visible on the screen but "carried along" by INPUT ARRAY. For bookkeeping etc. Better compiler error messages in 4GL. I hope you can understand that in its context :-) And finally, the big one: some way of moving my Unix 4GL system to Windows NT without a complete reachitecturing (not of NT, I assume that's a lost cause, despite Citrix's efforts).
