Syed Ali found a large onstat.out file created while he was on vacation and asked if it could be deleted. Marcus Haarmann and Art Kagel said someone likely made it manually, e.g. with 'onstat -o', which dumps shared memory; the size matched. Khaled Bentebal said typing 'o' in onstat -i does the same, and it can be removed safely. Solved.

Hi,
looks like somebody has produced a file manually, I dont think Informix
does this alone.
Maybe somebody did "onstat -a > onstat.out" or similar.

Most likely it was created manually by someone running "onstat -o
onstat.out". Is it approximately the size of the shared memory that is
reported at the top right of the onstat status line?

Sometimes this happens when you run onstat -i (interactive mode) and you
type "o" by mistake.
The size should the size of the shared memory unless you interrupt the
option before;in which case it will be smaller.
Just go ahead an remove the file. No problem.
