Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.

Hi,
The answer is quite easy, her some explanation:
1. A serial back-up (ontap and onbar -w ..) will start the backup of all
dbspaces at the smae time.
So the dbspaces are consistent at that time
2. With a parrallel back-up Informix will starts a back-up thread for every
dbspace and not all have to be started at the same time.
So every dbspace has it's own starting point. So the dbspaces must be
synchronized to be consistent.
So specific things for a parrallel back-up are:
- Every dbspace is handled seperately.
- Every dbspace has it's own synchronisation point
- Only when a dbspace is really in the back-up process temporary space is
required to store before images
So advantages are:
- parallel backup
- less temp dbspace requirements
To see the difference in action do:
- onbar -b -w
- onstat -g arc
- onbar -b
- onstat -g arc
You will see the difference in the output of the two onstat -g arc commands.
Look at the timestamps.
Hope this helps,
Rob Prop
