Optical Storage

I'm thinking of using optical storage device for data that's never going to change, but I have two questions (at least for now). How do you do an archive without backing up the info on the optical device? Since I have DR up and running and I'm only going to the have the optical device on the primary server how do I NOT replicate the info on this device? Any feedback or experiences with optical storage devices would be very helpful. thanks
