How should I go > about investigating this problem. Well, it shouldn't happen. However, both versions are very archaic and you should probably start by upgrading to 5.10 for both machines. I'm not sure that there's very much else you can do, to be quite honest. You could demonstrate that it is a networking problem (or not) by copying one table to the other database and then running the local-only query.
