Database Copy

Informix Ver 9.40.FC4 HP-UX 11.11 We have a 350Gb database running baan that the customer wishes to replicate. They are in the process of purchasing enough disks for this to be carried out on the same server as live. The question I have is there any way of copying the database other than to use export/import as this has been calculated to take in the region of 6 days! The last time I had to carry out anything like this was onto a new server which I did by creating all the dbspaces/chunks as live then used the level 0 backup to copy the data across....not an option here I guess... Thanks in advance.... Howard

Best way of doing this is to create a new set of disk spaces of the
same size as your existing, create a new onconfig file (with
associated entries in sqlhosts and /etc/services) then restore an
ontape -L 0 using the chunk rename option.Dead easy, dead quick and totally safe (unless you stuff your links or
renames up !)
Keith
if the target is the same as the source,
eq you come from hpux11.11 940.FC4 and also goto
hpux11.11 940.FC4 then a backup/restore should be the fastest way.
Otherwise you may consider remote selects , High perf loader
unload to fifos etc a lot of handy work, scripting...
has been done before... 1.5 TB sap db was copied in less then 48
hours.
using fifos, HPL and remote selects using steam pipe for smaller
tables....
it was copied to another instance on the same machine though....

Yes! This is a good point. Although Informix will stop you inadvertently
creating a new chunk of a chunk already in use on the same db server, it'll
quite happily let you fsck up the root dbspace of another instance with an
inaccurate re-directed restore.
Er, or so I'm told!
Hi, Howard.
Just a thought.
If you use all chunk on block file system(not using raw device), how about
the following ?
(Be aware, I do not test it.)
mount new disk on HP-UX.
Then dump / restore.
dump 0f - /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s7 | (cd /ifx_data; restore xf -)
umount old disk (Need oninit -ky before umount).
mount new disk on old device.
Then oninit.
How do you think my idea ?
Just my $0.02.
