Errno 5 is an i/o error. Suggest cleaning your tape drive and maybe new tapes.
You may want to check o/s h/w logs for actual tape drive problems.

Hello!
According to linux errno.h file,
your error code means:
#define EIO 5 /* I/O error */
So you may check on your operational system for (maybe) some additional
information.....
Hope it helps.
Best regards.

Try setting TAPESIZE to 0 ; this will cause ontape to detect the end of tape
rather than using the size you have set.
