ESQL/C - question on opening a database in v2.10

Hi: I am using an old version of Informix (version 2.10), and have a question on opening a database using ESQL/C. I can open a DB using the DB name and the DBPATH variable set. I haven't had any luck using the full UNIX path name; I keep getting syntax errors in the prepare statement. The documentation on this is a bit confusing about what is allowed and what is not allowed, and I think I've tried all ooptions.
