IIUG-IDS-9-4-UC2-linux Problems
Posted in 2005
A user installing IDS 9.40.UC2 on Slackware Linux 10.1 hit "oninit: error while loading shared libraries: libpam.so.0" after building openpam and faking the symlink. The fix was to install the proper Linux-PAM 0.77 library (symlinking a differently versioned libpam doesn't work), after which installation succeeded. A follow-on problem — oninit logging "Dynamic Server Started" but no running server or shared memory — drew suggestions (run oninit -v / -ivy, use a fresh 9.40 onconfig rather than the 7.30 one, check SHMBASE/SHMVIRTSIZE/SHMADD/BUFFERS, FQDN in sqlhosts, separate localhost and hostname lines in /etc/hosts), but no resolution is recorded in the thread.

I'm running Slackware Linux 10.1:
Linux fubar 2.4.29 #21 Thu Jan 20 17:11:39 PST 2005 i686 unknown
unknown GNU/Linux
I've downloaded and managed to get IDS-9-4-UC2 installed (after
installing openpam-20050201).
When I try oninit, I get
oninit: error while loading shared libraries: libpam.so.0: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
I did have to make a symbolic link in /usr/local/lib for libpam.so.0
(there wasn't one) so installserver would run:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 782 2005-03-30 16:00
/usr/local/lib/libpam.la*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 2005-03-30 16:00
/usr/local/lib/libpam.so -> libpam.so.2.0.0*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 2005-03-30 16:03
/usr/local/lib/libpam.so.0 -> libpam.so.2.0.0*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 2005-03-30 16:00
/usr/local/lib/libpam.so.2 -> libpam.so.2.0.0*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 305211 2005-03-30 16:00
/usr/local/lib/libpam.so.2.0.0*
LD_LIBRARY_PATH (which has worked fine for years for informix-7.30.UC5
for whatever that might be worth) looks like:
/opt/informix/lib/esql:/opt/informix/lib:/usr/local/lib
Did I miss something somewhere?
Thanks.

A few guesses only I'm afraid as I haven't used Slackware for ages.
Perhaps you just need to run "ldconfig" (as root) to pick up the link to
the library you want. But as you say adding the link got the installer
working it's unlikely this is the solution.
I do wonder whether you have the correct version of libpam. I have tried
before creating a link to a library of a different name and implied
version but this has never worked for me. There is a libpam library of
the right version on rpmfind.net but don't blame me if installing this
breaks your system.
Why Slackware? I don't want to get into a distro war but IBM has a
helpful list of distributions and what is required to get them to work
at http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/linux/ids.html

Went there, found that the "current" version is 0.77, went and got that from the maintainer, built, installserver, seems to work (well, Informix installs cleanly, so...). > > Why Slackware? Thanks.
With thanks to Ben and Andreas, things have installed but oninit won't
start. No error messages, but no start and no shared memory allocated
(semaphores, yes, but no attached shared memory).
I went through onconfig and sqlhosts and edited what seemed to need
editing pretty much the same as the 7.30.UC5 files. I cannot find a
"installing 9.40 on Linux" document anywhere, so I'm kind of working in
the dark, here -- is there a guide somewhere?
The online.log shows
Thu Mar 31 07:37:19 2005
07:37:19 Event alarms enabled. ALARMPROG =
'/opt/informix/etc/alarmprogram.sh'
07:37:19 Booting Language <c> from module <>
07:37:19 Loading Module <CNULL>
07:37:19 Booting Language <builtin> from module <>
07:37:19 Loading Module <BUILTINNULL>
07:38:42 IBM Informix Dynamic Server Started.
but there's no server running.
I have sqlhosts
fubar_a onipcshm fubar fubar_a
fubar_anet onsoctcp fubar fubar_anet
7.30.UC5 was, tried that, didn't work either
fubar_a onsoctcp fubar fubar_a
fubar_anet onsoctcp fubar fubar_anet
So, can some kind soul give me a hint?
Thanks

What do you get when you run 'oninit' with '-v' as an extra option?
You should see output on stdout (or perhaps stderr), indicating what it
is doing. That may give you a hint about the problem - it may help us
help you solve the problem.

Worry about whether fubar needs to be a FQDN fubar.mydomain.tld

Check your settings of SHMBASE, SHMVIRTSIZE, SHMADD and BUFFERS in your
onconfig. Sensible values just to get you running are:
BUFFERS 20000
SHMBASE 0x10000000L
SHMVIRTSIZE 73536
SHMADD 32768
If this doesn't work I would try and see if you can get the server up
with a new rootdbs completely separate from anything you're using now,
the default onconfig with perhaps some adjustments to point to the right
log files, your new rootdbs and anything else you think appropriate.
Don't use a 7.30 onconfig for a 9.40 server. Initialise the server with
"oninit -ivy" and see what you get. What displays on the console when
you initialise the server?
Ben.

No idea if this is the problem, but I think I had some issue in the past
where /etc/hosts combined a line for localhost with the proper host name.
It should have two lines:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.2.100 fubar
I think it was old Suse 9 that caused me grief.
