IDS v7 -> v9 upgrades
Posted in 2004
Not a bug report but a discussion: Neil Truby asks why IDS 7 customers should rush to upgrade to IDS 9 when v7 support ran until April 2006, and whether the licence uplift cost might be dropped nearer the deadline. Responses cite new features (functional indexes, bigger chunks, better diagnostics, dynamic SET EXPLAIN, TAPESIZE 0, UDRs in various languages, HDR plus ER) and the risk of hitting unfixed 7.3x bugs, plus the danger of leaving migration until support ends. Counterpoint: stable, rarely-changed sites gain little and may not want to pay. No consensus or resolution is recorded.

Can anyone summarise the reasons why customers should do this soon? IDS v7 supports ends in April 2006. If I were an IDS v7 customer I'd see no great reason to hurry. I'd wait and see if IBM scraps the licence uplift cost as we get nearer the time. But I'd be interested in arguments to the contrary. -- Neil Truby t:01932 724027 Director m:07798 811708 Ardenta Limited e:neil.truby@ardenta.com

That comes just after the one they're working on called "Benefits of migrating from IDS to DB2". They won't start on the 7 to 9 one till that's finished. > "Obnoxio The Clown" <obnoxio@hotmail.com> wrote in message > news:c109np$1b94ga$2@ID-64669.news.uni-berlin.de... >> Neil Truby wrote: >> >> > Can anyone summarise the reasons why customers should do this soon? >> > IDS v7 supports ends in April 2006. >> > If I were an IDS v7 customer I'd see no great reason to hurry. I seem to be the only person in Christendom who thinks that the big chunks thingy is a nice bauble, rather than the greatest thing since Lycra. As for the datablades, functional indexes etc, this all depends if you're likely to use them. Most of our customers don't.

Most of our customers don't. My point being not that these aren;t all good things, but why do IBM think people will pay a premium to upgrade for them?

Besides all the new features and extensibility there is another VERY good reason to move: There will be an increase tendency to hit bugs/problems in 7.3x that won't be corrected (if they imply big changes). I'm currently hitting a problem (won't call it BUG because it doesn't seem to be identified) in HDR on 7.31 that apparently I can't reproduce in 9.3. And if you look carefully I think you'll see great advantages in several of the new features. And I don't mean the more "flashy" ones... Consider for instance: - Dynamic set explain - TAPESIZE 0 - Complete freedom to write functions in "any" language - HDR and ER simultaneous ... The point is... would you take real advantage of a reasonable number of this new features. And even if the answer is "yes" would your customer accept to pay for the beneficts? This last questions can only be answered by you and your customers. Regards.

But if you've been running 7.30 UD1 for years without incident, what are the chances of encountering a new bug now?
Neil Truby wrote: > But if you've been running 7.30 UD1 for years without incident, what are the > chances of encountering a new bug now? Very little I suppose. But it depends on the change rate of your environment. My "usual" environment can be a lot of time without hitting something and suddently hit it. Note that you don't have to hit a "new" bug. You just have to hit any "old" bug ;) And for this to happen you just need to change something... But as I said, a customer which has been using an "old" version successfuly, and does very little changes in their environment won't feel any pressure to move... They can wait for the end of support... But nevertheless we all know that there are issues in the migration (and I'm not talking about bugs - these tend to be corrected -, i'm talking about different behaviours causes by new features)... So waiting until end of support can be risky. Regards.
