FDIV bug and database operations
Posted in 1994
Just a general question to those who deleve into the deepest levels of the engine. There has been *considerable* activity over the Intel Pentium FDIV bug. I don't want to bring that whole discussion here though obviously those who have high precision numeric fields in tables are at risk if you're dividing. My question concerns the overall operation of the engine -- does the engine execute operations central to the maintainence and upkeep of the engine where faults in the chip could cause problems? I don't even pretend to know what happens at a very low level in terms of space allocation/reporting, engine statistical reports, index creation and traversing, hashing etc so I don't know to what "precision" these tasks execute. Just wondering if I should be concerned since we're thinking of upgrading 140+ servers to Pentiums. Thanks for any insight. Carlton -- Carlton Doe "It's not *over* until I win!"
