alter fragmented table

Hi, We have a table with 105 million records and is fragmented across 4 dbspaces. We are trying to alter 3 columns in the table from char(12) to char(15). when we run the alter statement, it runs for more than an hour but doesnt complete. Can you please suggest alternative to alter such tables? What parameters need to be set to boost the performance? We are on Informix 9.40.FC9W2XH and HP-UX B.11.23. Thanks in advance.
