First -- read the Informix manuals. Then Joe Lumbley's Informix DBA Survival Guide. Try to find a copy of the first edition -- the current is for the 7.x engine, and a lot of things have changed or been added. Or -- better yet -- upgrade to a 7.x engine -- it is a far superior product from the 5.x versions. Informix's web site has online documentation you can download. They also have CBTs in the training section ranging from basic relational database design (General Database secion) through Informix Dynamic Server (IDS, in the Informix section).
