RE: OnBar and ADSM

Rick,
Where can I find the utility to expire unwanted backups from the
ADSM server? I could not locate such a utility at IBM's ADSM website.
Our ADSM database is growing about 1 GB a month and such a utility
would be extremely helpful.
Is it an ADSM version 3 utility? Or can it also be used with version 2?
(We won't be upgrading from ADSM v2 to v3 until October).

Hi All,
Dont forget about the sysutils database. The entries are not removed from
the
tables ever. The release notes give examples on how to clean up the tables.
They
recommend not to remove the log entries though. There is also the ixbar.#
file, in
INFORMIXDIR/etc. You will have to clean it up also, if you like to do house
cleaning:)
I also assume that you are talking about using onbar stand alone, and not
using a third party
utility such as Backtrack. It makes every backup(log or dbspace) unique.
Therefore, no
matter what you configure your management class to, it will NEVER expire ANY
backup.
They do supply(ftp from their website) a utility that will expire the
unwanted backups on the
ADSM server. You have to supply the backups though, to which you want
expired. I query
the ADSM database to retrieve this info, based on a date range, then feed it
into their utility.

The utility is on BMC ftp server. Their product Backtrack interfaces with
onbar, using ADSM.
If you go to their web customer support, and search for resolution ID 16384,
it explains the problem
and tells you how to get the utility, from their ftp server. You probably
have to be a customer to get it?
From what I can tell, there is no reason why it wont work with just onbar
alone.
Although if you are using onbar stand alone you shouldn't have this
problem(except for the logs).
I wrote my own query
that reteives the backup info from the ADSM database, which is used as input
to the utility. Their method
involved querying each volume (q vol), which was a nightmare.
We use version 3 of ADSM. I needed ver 3.1.6 or higher of ADSM client API
for it to work properly.
IBM has a redbook with some good info on ADSM, including info on Backtrack,
management class settings,etc.
