In article <mbehna.238.000F138C@promus.com>, mbehna@promus.com says most eloquently... > [much deleted to save space] >You know Informix is doing something right and scaring Oracle if Oracle is >having to rely on misleading customers to keep its market share. That how I >measure success. I guess Oracle's back is to the wall and it ran out of ideas >so it had to reach into the ugly tricks bag to promote itself. > >'Nuff said It's too early to tell who's scaring who. But don't take my word for it, down- load the Oracle Person Workgroup Server FOR FREE and check it out yourself: http://www.oracle.com This is more than you'll be able to do with INFORMIX, without having to go through the VAR process, and mind you I think INFORMIX has great products-- just gettin' pricy on us. ORACLE at least is taking lessons from Microsoft- -or is it the other way around? I remember a couple of years back where ORACLE got into some sort of trouble with the FED over the number of sold copies, but can't remember the details, so better not to report incomplete information. :-) As to dirty tricks, if you look at the difference in marketing techniques, it really doesn't matter about the merits of who's got PDQ better than the other. If neither are sensitive to mainstream computing, neither will be around in the future anyway. As much as I would kick ORACLE for not having a 4GL, I must say they're doing a helluva job responding to mainstream computing. They don't need a 4GL any- more now, just a good data base engine that can address the median business. Access can hit ORACLE via ODBC or INFORMIX, so what's the difference. If you've been in a big corp away from some "diversity" in computing, you better wake up...dumping software in your lap is the new way to your pocket, but it really isn't new, just look at IBM. It doesn't even matter if the solution isn't the best. If the other solutions cost more and don't do much more than the less costly ones, what do you think the customer is going to do? BTW, the ORACLE install was <ahem> seamless...I just sat there and watched it....:-) Their homepages were a little less giffy and easy to navigate too. -- \\\\|// (o o) ==============================---o00--(_)--00o---============================ Tim Schaefer http://www.gate.net/~tschaefe The Computer Business Company, Inc. tschaefe@gate.net Coconut Creek, FL, USA INXUTIL 2.0 is now absolutely FREE Ub...eh...Now, see, who gets to ask the questions here? --Ross Perot =============================================================================
