We use NT servers to provide the clients (Win 95 & Win 3.11 using INet & IConnect to talk to Informix) with IP addresses via DHCP. Our Unix box is a static IP and each client has an entry in their hosts file for the unix box, and an entry in services for the port. Applications that connect in (we use SQLWindows apps) have an entry like this for the INET connection in a file called SQL.INI, but I'm sure its pretty much the same for other apps: [infogtwy] remotedbname=dbname,DATABASE dbname,-hunixbox -sonlineport the h option is the "host" entry in hosts the s option is the "port" entry in services This is the same for static IP addresses and there are NO entries in hosts on the unix box. I believe the packet requests contain the IP information Informix requires, and it doesn't need to resolve the address locally. We have this working over a LAN with DHCP and WAN with fixed IP. DHCP works by allocating the client the IP address at log on time and after that you are in the same situation as static, except Informix can't resolve an IP to computer name relationship but this doesn't matter as our clients have to come in through a user name which is known and seen.
