Drop or resize fragment
Posted in 2013
User couldn't drop an empty future fragment from an expression-fragmented table because dbspace was full. The ALTER FRAGMENT DROP PARTITION command was attempted but failed. Solution: Use the table/fragment shrink function to remove free space, optionally after altering the first extent size. Execute either execute function task("fragment shrink", partnum) or execute function task("table shrink", tabname, dbsname).

Topics: Storage & Space Management
We've created a table with multiple fragments. It's fragmented by expression
so each fragment holds a month's data and is about 4g in size.
Now one of the dbspaces is full! I'd like to drop some of the *future*
fragments that don't have anything in them yet, say the one for 2013_06, or
even better resize it much smaller.
I can't see the syntax for reducing the first extent size of a fragment.
When I tried:
ALTER FRAGMENT ON TABLE tablename DROP PARTITION p2013_06
I got dbs02 is full. Which is true. But what was it trying to do? Perhaps if
I added just a tiny chunk to dbs02 I'd be OK?
What I really do NOT want is for the whole table, all 1 billion rows, to be
processed. This fragment is empty and the operation should, I hope, be
instantaneous?
Thanks

the table shrink function will remove all free space at the end of the
table to the
first extent size. You can first alter the table adjusting the first
extent size, then remove
all the free space at the end of each fragment by using the shrink command.
execute function task("fragment shrink", partnum)
OR
execute function task("table shrink", "tabname","dbsname")

Hmmmm.... I think John Miller would be more useful if he is able to
re-connect with us. It looks like he's connected to the new telescope
located somewhere in Mexico... :)
Anyway... Don't "DROP". Dropping will affect the expression, not the data
(and yes, I know you apparently have no data...)
I can't tell what it's trying to do... Do you have a REMAINDER partition?
In any case, try to DETACH and then drop the new table.
After that you probably can change the FIRST EXTENT SIZE (it only affects
the definition) and then recreate the partition (it should be smaller)
Regards.

the table shrink function will remove all free space at the end of the

execute function task("fragment shrink", partnum)
OR
execute function task("table shrink", "tabname","dbsname")

I beleive John is trying to say this:
the table shrink function will remove all free space at the end of the
table to the
first extent size. You can first alter the table adjusting the first
extent size, then remove
all the free space at the end of each fragment by using the shrink command.
execute function task("fragment shrink", partnum)
OR
execute function task("table shrink", "tabname","dbsname")

Okay ... now my gmail thinks the following is Chinese ... but last time I

Is there any methodology by which people who accidentally post this format
could have their "real" reply listed instead of the following?
