IBM Announces Socket Based Licensing for Informix Dynamic Server, Workgroup Edition

When I was at the IIUG conference last month, more than one person I talked to was unaware of the some recent changes IBM had made to the way you could license Informix Dynamic Server, Workgroup Edition. The change in February (http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/3/897/ ENUS209-043/ENUS209-043.PDF) that allowed for up to two active read secondaries while using Workgroup Edition was one of them. Since finding these announcements can sometime be dodgey at times, I thought I would give everyone the link by putting it up on the group. I read through it and didn’t find any information about costs associated with converting one’s current type of license to the socket metric, but I am sure that will be coming shortly. Enjoy. http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/7/897/ENUS209-167/ENUS209-167.PDF or http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/ShowDoc.jsp?docURL=/common/ssi/rep_ca/7/897/ENUS209-167/index.html&breadCrum=DET001PT022&url=buttonpressed=DET002PT005&specific_index=DET001PEF502&DET015PGL002=DET001PEF011&submit.x=7&submit.y=8&lang=en_US
Thanks for bringing that up Clancy. It is a gripe of mine with IBM that they do not do a very good job of presenting the details of what's in and not in the different editions. So far it seems that they have been unwilling to update the edition comparison page. I hear that 'updating that page is on the "To Do" list but they don't plan to do it soon'. I have just taken a look to see if there were any updates and I see that IBM has changed the edition comparison page links to now point to http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-0801doe/, but even this page is only mildly better since it does not list all of the differences (restrictions) between the editions and is also out of date with the announcement that you have pointed out. IBM, we know that you are very good at witting extremely long and convoluted license agreements or announcements (as seen in Clancy's links below), could you please put as much effort into making easily readable user information pages? For the little guys, you end up paying close to retail because you're not buying enough product to make it worth IBM's effort to offer you a discount. You buy from a partner? They've got to make money too and even if they gave you their points, it wouldn't touch the discounting levels that the big boys get. So when it comes to pricing, there's list, scheduled discount, and then the 'negotiated' discount you can get if you play your cards right. 90% off of J anyone? ;-) (Oh the stories I could tell ... ;-) But still, we do have a way to see if there's any value to this 'offering'... Take a 2 socket Intel motherboard with their Xeon 5500 series 4 core chips. Thanks to a suggestion from Neil, we have a couple of ways to look at this box. Either all 8 cores for a database server, or split it in to two virtual boxes, w 4 cores going for database, 4 cores going for web, dns, mail services. So how does this price out for IDS? We actually have a nice little matrix that we can see, using retail pricing of course. IDS Workgroup, IDS Enterprise Edition, etc vs 8 core vs 4 cores, etc ... Then we can see what IBM's really doing. But hey! What do I know? ;-P Seriously, I don't know their pricing .... -G
