Stored procedures Vs Non stored procedures

I was trying to evaluate performance between ESQL/C code executing stored procedures against code not using stored procedures and discovered that code using stored procedures was slower than the other. I was trying to get a count of the rows in a table in both the cases. The difference was even more noticable as I did the select in a loop. Has anybody out there noticed similar response times?
