Well, the source of the leak was an IBM speaker delivering a keynote address at the IIUG conference. I don't need to tell you this but typically, vendors do not pre-announce the details of their benchmarks, features, .etc. From: Ian Michael Gumby <im_gumby@hotmail.com> To: <informix-list@iiug.org> Date: 04/29/2010 06:45 AM Subject: something smells like fish in Denmark Call me silly. Someone puts out a 'leak' that IBM is finally going to do benchmarks using IDS. Yet when questioned, no mention of what benchmark is being used. The silence is deafening. ;-) -G The New Busy is not the too busy. Combine all your e-mail accounts with Hotmail. Come on, go nuke obstacle, they deserve it. Have to look at obstacle nowadays too; running informix V11 on my machine with 1 GB of memory runs like a champ; I can easyl limit it to what i want it to use.. Horricle V11 goes into swap, i can not make it smaller, it does not want to start otherwise... YUK and that piece of shit em memory hogging crap makes it worse... createing an online backup using rman one need trx log in obstacle... extra room for problems... Hmm rman, that is worse then onarchive which was the worst piece of shit informix ever produced. Obstacle doesn't have set lock mode to wait xxx; only lock mode to wait forever... their consistent read YUK.... snapshot too old. barf...write an reservation app.. Superboer. BTW the benchmark published was on db2cv; why the heck not on informix??? besides that, publish a benchmark which is not the fastest/best; what is the point in doing that??? it is a free add for the competition or am i loosing my brain or go crazy???? -->> from elreg: The result was not the fastest recorded; far from it, a Sun SPARC box recorded 7.65 million TPC-Cs last year. Nor is it best in price/ performance; a Dell PowerEdge recorded $0.50/TPC-C in November last year, with the Power 780 delivering $0.69/TPC-C, sixth in the rankings behind various Dell and HP X86 servers. You can toss shots at Oracle all you want. It doesn't matter. They perform well enough and their business model doesn't get bogged down in to technical matters. Larry is capable of offering core systems from hardware through end user app. Plus the service to make it work. A true one stop shop. So your company wants an accounting or ERP system? Talk to Oracle. You want SAP? It runs on Oracle, and Oracle hardware. The point is that they positioned their products based on offering a solution. Not the individual component. With IBM, they sell the components and rely on partners to sell the solutions (end software) based on their components. Well partners also sell solutions to work on Oracle. You do the math. ;-) If you're looking to sell a system for in-house development? Well if their front office is running on Oracle, it now makes more sense to choose oracle by default because you already have in house expertise on Oracle. It takes a major business requirement to switch to a different vendor. Now this used to be the case with Motorola. I say used to because my data is around 10 years old. There... front office Oracle. Tech... IDS embedded in product. (Remember the phone call poster? Cisco, Moto, etc ...) The reason.. IDS did what it does well. But that's an extreme thing. Now net new customers who have no bias aren't looking at IDS primarily because they don't know it exists. There's definitely more to this and it goes to the heart of the matter. No one knows anything about IDS because its never mentioned, the sales teams don't know the product. And its difficult to differentiate it from its competitors. While IBM will announce that they are 'planning' to do a benchmark, but don't release any more info, means that they don't have one ready and they may not actually do it because a senior exec may kill it. There's more to it, but hey! I don't want to spoil the fun and guess how long it will be before IBM announces the benchmark. ;-) Definitely something to SSM (Solution Selling Methodology) and applying it beyond the initial sales call but at an approach to the market as a whole. And yes, I do know something. It was one of only two IBM training classes I was allowed to attend. (Yes there's a story behind that too. ;-) -G > From: superboer7@t-online.de > Subject: Re: something smells like fish in Denmark > Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2010 08:21:24 -0700 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > > Come on, go nuke obstacle, they deserve it. > Have to look at obstacle nowadays too; > > running informix V11 on my machine with 1 GB of memory runs like a > champ; I can easyl limit it to what i want it to use.. > Horricle V11 goes into swap, i can not make it smaller, it does not > want to start otherwise...
