I started off answering this by saying confidentally that I think the code streams are identical, and that you are left *not* to use the precluded functionality on an honour basis. Certainly I just checked a PPA download site for one of my customers who has both Enterprise and Workgroup and there is not a separate download for the latter. But also I recall some while back being unable to allocate more than 4 cpu vps with a Workgroup download - perhaps it was the IIUG freebie. So now I'm not certain! Anyway you shouldn't use IDS in contravention of its terms because IBM has a zealous Compliance programme, as is its right. To answer your question: I have lots of experience in multiple customer sites, and it's fine so long as you can do without parallel backups and parallel queries. Typically then this favours small-to-medium database servers and OLTP applications. It might also be thought that 4 processor cores and 8g memory - the IDS v10 Workgroup infrastructure limit - is getting a little restrictive the way hardware is going. I'm interested to know how you'll save money by "trading down". You can't get a refund on the Enterprise licences you presumably already own.

Niel, I think that with IDS 10 Workgroup, you can use parallel backup/ restore and parallel queries, at least acording to some Redbook I've read. It would be bad if there was a limitation of 4 CPU VPs. For example, with newer SPARCs, there is a need to allocate multiple CPU VPs per physical CPU to use all the CPU power available. Darko Krstic
