ESQL/C sqlexit() fails (???)

I've got a Windows application using ESQL/C with INET 5.01 and an RS/6000 server. Once in a blue moon, calls to sqlexit() will fail. Informix tech support didn't have a solid explanation for this other than the fact that the sqlturbo for the connection may still be freeing its locks or be in a critical section. Can anyone offer any other explanations for why this is happening? Please respond via e-mail, as I do not regularly follow this group.
