Query "<"...?

Using: Informix-SQL 4.13.UD1 Informix-ONLINE 5.03.UC5 Is there a way to query for "<" in a field...? I have tried "\\<" without success.....is there another "escape" character? The field I'm looking at is one of three possibilities: null "<=" " =" and I'd like to get counts of the "<="s vs the " ="s. Yea, this was probably a poor choice of symbols but it does accurately describe the input data relations that our folks find conveniently easy to remember.
