You can if you call the script from the command line, but the same
syntax will error in interactive mode. Try the following
Dbaccess database << EOF
select * from table1;!echo test
select * from table1;
EOF
(the '!' is the key)
This basically tells dbaccess to shell out as if you had pressed '!'
within interactive mode.

I know it works fine with stored procedures.....
