Special-interest Informix mailing lists
Posted in 1997
I have noticed that several special-interest mailing lists related to Informix have been mentioned recently. If you are thinking about starting such a list or are already on one, this may be of interest to you. One of the decisions made at this year's IWUC was that the IIUG will make its home system, iiug.org, available for hosting special-interest mailing lists related to Informix. This will be a free service, much like the already established free Web site service for local Informix user groups. Mailing lists on iiug.org are maintained by the list management software package Majordomo. This package will allow one or more list managers at remote sites to oversee a mailing list at the central site using special commands sent via e-mail. List managers will handle the more straightforward administrative tasks such as approving subscription requests (if needed), etc. They will also be able to get help from Mike Reetz and me in solving some of the more involved e-mail problems. Providing this service is another way in which the IIUG hopes to fulfill two of its primary missions: to coordinate and consolidate the efforts of Informix users to communicate with each other and with Informix, and to utilize economy of scale and collective resources to assist local or special efforts within the Informix user community. The IIUG Board of Directors must approve any mailing list based at iiug.org. Some examples of the types of lists that will be considered for hosting on iiug.org are: o lists related to IIUG Special Interest Groups (SIGs) o lists related to the IIUG Advocacy Program o discussion lists whose primary languages are other than English o lists that discuss specifically defined Informix-related topics The Board is currently working out the details of how special-interest mailing lists will fit in with other IIUG activities such as SIGs and the Advocacy Program. It's a bit premature to start cranking out Majordomo configuration files, but I did want to let you know what's happening. If you would more information on the technical aspects of starting a mailing list based at iiug.org or moving one there, reply to me or contact Mike Reetz <miker@iiug.org>. For more information on IIUG SIGs or the Advocacy Program, contact Cathy Kipp, IIUG President <cathy@iiug.org>, or Carlton Doe <carlton@iiug.org>.
