Given that both IDS and DB2 are being actively developed, and that they are being enriched by new features and cross-fertilisation of ideas, then they are already converging. That they will converge into a 'single' product is, I guess, inevitable. What IBM/Informix need to ensure is that at the point of convergence it is 'trivial' to migrate from both IDS and DB2 to the converged product, DB10 (for example). Your example conversation can happen now of course: IBM: I have a number of potential solutions, SE, Online5, IDS7, IDS9,... Client: Which one should I buy. IBM: You should choose the one that most closely matches your current and perceived requirements. I'll help you make this decision and ensure that you make the best choice for your business. What is really clever about all the potential solutions is that it's really easy to migrate your data from one to another, and your applications will transparently run against any or all of them... -- Andrew Lennard andy@kontron.demon.co.uk

Surely: "Well, the commission rates are highest on IDS9 so I'd recommend ...."? :-)
