Can't run 7.22 on Solaris 7:(
Posted in 1999
Poster couldn't start Informix 7.22 on Solaris 7: oninit failed with "Cannot open chunk .../rootdbs, errno = 4" and a fatal shared-memory init error, despite setting shmsys/semsys values in /etc/system (the enable_sm_wa variable was rejected by the kernel). Replies suggested checking chunk ownership/permissions (informix:informix, 660), following the documented install order and setting SHMBASE in the ONCONFIG, and reading the release notes under $INFORMIXDIR/release. The poster fixed it by adding 64MB RAM and reinstalling from scratch, but then hit a new, unresolved Netscape SuiteSpot error -406 "Unable to load locale categories".

Help please,
i tried to install Informix 7.22 on SPARC Solaris 7 box,
but it fails to run:
oninit: Cannot open chunk '/export/home/informix/dbspace/rootdbs'. errno
= 4
oninit: Fatal error in shared memory initialization
I put in /etc/system follows (from install.htm):
set enable_sm_wa=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=268435456
set semsys:seminfo_semmap=64
set semsys:seminfo_semmni=4096
set semsys:seminfo_semmns=4096
set semsys:seminfo_semmnu=4096
set semsys:seminfo_semume=64
set semsys:seminfo_semmsl=100
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=100
but enable_sm_wa commented out becazuse
at boot time it complained "sorry, variable 'enable_sm_wa' is not
defined in the 'kernel'
What is wrong? Or may be it is not possible to run Informix 7.22 on a
Solaris 7 box?
And i saw in the same install.htm mentioned physical address of a shared
memory segment, but nothing where to put it. May be i must insert it
into
my /etc/system, but what must be a name of the variable?
Thanks in advance!
Are your permissions on the chunk informix:informix and 660 ??

For installation you require to proceed in the following sequence :
1) Setup OS params as specified in the release directory
2) Boot the server
3) Login as root
4) Create a user and group both with the same name 'informix'
5) Unload the software from given media in the home directory of user
'informix'
6) $INDORMIXDIR & $PATH should be already set in the .profile of user
'informix'
7) Run the installation script as root
8) Now login as user 'informix'
9) Edit onconfig.std and place address of share memory segment for the
parameter SHMBASE
10) Run onmonitor
I gather that you have missed out on point (9) above. Do let me know
(ejaz@hotmail.com) if you are successful.
Best wishes

:-)
It complained during a standard installation. :-)
I installed addition 64M of memory, rm -rf'ed $informixdir
and installed again. All works fine now from dbaccess,
but Netscape SuiteSpot gets from it the error message:
ERROR CODE
ERROR MESSAGE
database.majorErrorCode = -406
[VENDORLIB] Vendor Library Error:
Unable to load locale
categories.
database.minorErrorCode = 0
Server Type: INFORMIX

What it means?
I tried set both C and en_US locales, but nothing helps.

Thanks! But if release notes are like error messages... :-)
