License Trouble - LUS versus ILMT
Posted in 2014
User questioned whether IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT) is required for Informix Workgroup Edition using Limited Use Socket (LUS) sub-capacity licensing, skeptical that ILMT (designed for PVU licensing) could properly measure LUS. Responses clarified that ILMT is mandatory for PVU sub-capacity but has exceptions for smaller environments.

Hey, iam in trouble with the IBM license model... What i want is to use an Informix Workgroup Edition with LUS(Limited Use Socket) licensing in a sub capacity enviroment. LUS is eligible for subcapacity licensing. So, my IBM Distributor says, i have to install the ILMT(IBM License Metric Tool). I cant understand this. For me, the ILMT checks against the PVU license model, how can this work against a LUS model? In a LUS enviroment i can change CPU model with different pvu's, so the pvu can be higher or lower, but i licensed against LUS, so it doesnt matter. My question, is it true, that i have to install the ILMT when i want to use sub-capacity license with LUS? Best Regards Sebastian
I suppose that any sub-capacity installation needs ILMT. ILMT should be able to measure the number of physical cores associated with a virtual environment. And that influences the licenses you must purchase. I suppose that's the rational behind it. But For an official answer, please contact IBM or your BP or distributor and make sure they clarify it. Hi Sebastian, You must not always use the ILMT. Here are some more informations about Informix Workgroup (LUS) SubCapacity and ILMT, you can find on: http://www-01.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage/ibmlicensemetrictool.html ... Use of IBM License Metric Tool The use of IBM License Metric Tool is recommended for Full Capacity PVU environments, and is mandatory for use with PVU sub-capacity licensing. Exceptions to this requirement are: 1. when ILMT does not yet provide support for the Eligible Virtualization Environment ... 2. if your Enterprise has fewer than 1,000 employees and contractors worldwide, you are not a Service Provider, and you have not contracted with a Service Provider to manage your Eligible Virtualization Environment 3. if total physical capacity of your servers with an Eligible Virtualization Environment, measured on a Full Capacity basis, but licensed using sub-capacity terms is less than 1,000 PVUs. For the above exceptions, customers must manually manage, track, and prepare a Manual Calculation of Virtual Capacity worksheet for each server. ------------------------------------------- Additional Information for counting Limited Use Socket Sub-capacity Licensing: Take a look to the license agreements for IDS-WE 12.10, (for example http://www.cursor-distribution.de/de/portfolio-und-vertrieb/verkauf-informix/ibm -lizenzvereinbarungen-informix?read_link=6&lcode=de) and follow the link in the Limited Use Socket section: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/smb/pdfs/SubcapacityGuide.pdf This Guide provides information and examples regarding Sub-capacity licensing under both Limited Use Virtual Server (LU Virtual Server) and Limited Use Socket (LU Socket) licensing. How exactly do you want to use LUS sub-capacity? You have a server that has, say, 4 sockets of 4 cores each, and you want to create a VM on it that has, say, 2vcpus? I'm unclear how any virtualisation technology will allow you to pin your sub-capacity VM to a specific socket, which you could then licence on LUS. Are you able to set out in detail what you intend please?
For example, i have a server with 2 sockets, 8 cores each. I hava 1 LUS license. Sub-capacity is eligible for LUS. The virtual maschine with the Infomix installation have 8 cores, 8 cores=1 socket. That is ok, it doenst matter on which socket the vm runs, one or both, the thing is, to have not more than 8 cores in the vm. This configuration is correct, no trouble with IBM. My problem is the following. IBM says, you have to use the ILMT when you want to use sub-capacity. In my opinion, ILMT cant observer LUS sub-capacity licensing, it can only proof against pvu. So, it is really true that you have to use ILMT in a LUS sub-capacity model or not? P.S. there is a lot virtualization technologies that is able to pin specific socket to a vm, look at hard partitioning, or try oracle vm ;-)
Thanks. I've learnt a lot from this! Hrvoje Zokovic pointed out this link: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/smb/pdfs/SubcapacityGuide.pdf . Example 2.3 seems to be exactly your case. This document http://www-03.ibm.com/software/products/en/licensemetrictool/ clearly states that "IBM® License Metric Tool helps IBM Passport Advantage® customers determine their full and sub-capacity processor value units (PVU) licensing requirements." So on the face of it, as per your original your post, it shouldn't be needed. For what it's worth: - you'll waste an inordinate amount of time trying to get anyone at IBM to give you a straight and definitive answer in writing, and no-one will, because the IBM Compliance team is a law unto itself. - my own bitter experience is that IBM Compliance neither understands nor cares about technical reasons why ILMT *can't* provide the correct information. They'll just say you're contractually obliged to use it and you must do so. I recently had a customer case with IBM OOCOD (Power servers) per-day capacity on demand. IBM Software Compliance did not care that ILMT *cannot* report with a granularity of part-day, nor that IBM hardware reports were giving exactly the information that *is* required, but which ILMT cannot provide. ALL they cared about was that the rules say ILMT must be used (again, highly arguable, as in your case) and it wasn't, and it tried to claim that the customer was non-compliant. The safest thing to do is to bite your tongue, install the ILMT bloatware, and produce the completely pointless reports if requested to do so.
