Reading informix backup from tape drive
Posted in 2013
Poster needed to restore a 40GB ontape backup onto a standby server that has no tape drive, and asked how to get the tape-based backup readable there. Suggestions: for a small instance, take the ontape backup to disk and copy the file to the standby for restore; or point the standby's ONCONFIG TAPEDEV at the primary's tape device remotely (e.g. TAPEDEV primaryserver:/dev/rmt1), which requires an rsh daemon and trusted-host setup on the primary. Art Kagel also suggested using ifxclone to restore the secondary directly from the live primary. The poster didn't confirm which option he used.

Hi All,
I have requirements as below and my current server using ontape backup.
My standby server need to restore this backup but the issue is my standby
server doesn't have tape drive and needs to read this file to filesystem
and then restore to tape.
Is there any option to do this?
Thank you

What is the size of your instance? If its a small one you can do a
ontape on disk and move the file to standby and restore. Another option
would be to point your standby server to read the tape device of the primary
server.

You can include the primary server tape device path in your onconfig file in
the secondary server and try a restore.
TAPEDEV primaryserver:/dev/rmt1
# Tape device path

Previous contents were not readable. TAPEDEV primaryserver:/dev/rmt1
For this to work, rsh daemon must be configured on primaryserver and a trust must be defined. Two good options: 1) Use the primary's tape drive remotely, 2) use ifxclone
to restore the secondary directly from the primary live. Ifxclone is
documented in the Administrator's Reference Manual.
