OWS 7.22 / NT error -951

I'm working with Online Wokrgroup Server 7.22 on Win NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3. I can use the database as long as the user who logs in is in the group 'Informix Administrator'. Then I tried another NT-User ID. First i used: GRANT CONNECT TO NewUser then GRANT SELECT ON MyTable TO NewUser Now i can find the NewUser in sysusers and systabauth as usertype C priority 5. But when i try to connect with this userid, i get error -951: User username is not known on the database server. So that means: in the database server, not in the database. there he has connect and select rights. But how can i grant rights to the database server? So my question is: Has the user to be in a special group with special rights on the database server, or what is wrong?

It can be a dummy entry if you wish (ie. no login capability). If you use NIS, NewUser needs to be properly configured on your NIS machine. I'm working completely under Windows NT 4.0, as Server and Client. The user is defined as a normal domain-user, he can log on at the workstation. But only when i put him in the nt-group 'informix-administrator' then he can log on to the database server. Please explain what is NIS, something from UNIX?

I don't know if I can be of much help (I try to stay as far away from Microsoft as possible). It still sounds like something is missing from the user's domain account. If he can log on at the workstation but not at the server, something needs to be tweaked within the domain. Maybe Informix requires public users to belong to a special group that has not yet been configured in the domain? The Informix documentation for the Workgroup Server should say something about this. NIS stands for Network Information Service. It essentially provides a means to centrally control user access to multiple hosts. My dealings with NIS have been limited to UNIX environments, but that does not mean that a variation or subset of NIS is not available to non-UNIX environments. I believe that NT provides a means to centrally control both domain and workstation user accounts, but it is not NIS. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. You will want to check the permissions assigned to the various groups on your server. Even if that user has all the proper Informix permissions, he may not be in a group that is allowed to log on locally. You want to check in User Manager for Domains, under user rights. If you look at 'Log on Locally,' more than likely only administrator groups are allowed this privilege (this is normal practice). If you want the user to log in at the server without giving him administrator privileges TO the server, then assign his non-administrator group the 'Log On Locally' privilege. -- Don H.
