Re: Ontape
Posted in 1997
We tried that, no, ontape just refuses to restore to "missing" or
"smaller" chunks.
I think onbar also does the same behavior. A few possible thought we
have in mind but yet to try is:
- HPL, unload and reload
- Informix also push their Enterprise Replication, which claims
to be able to replicate to other machine, even at table level...

: What we need to do (its along story) is to restore this to a machine
: with much less disk space as the one that the ontape -s came from.
: As you can see the actual used space comes to about 10Gb yet more than
: 30 has been allocated.
: Is it possible to squeeze the data from the ontape -s (using ontape -r)
: into a 10Gb area (say of 2x5Gb chunks) using offsets etc. Documentation
: seems to suggest that if we archived it from a chunk of 2Gb, even if
: only 2Mb was used within it, to restore it on another machine would need
: a chunk of 2Gb to restore it into. Therefore the machine on which it is
: to be restored needs in excess of 30Gb in free space. Am I way out here
: or is this the way Informix works.
: This is a particularly urgent problem so immediate replies would be
