Client Server and DNS

I've been having a problem. We use ODBC to connect to a Sparc Solaris 2.4 with Informix Online 7.11UC1 and when we turn on DNS for sendmail the ODBC clients take anywhere between 1 and 5 minutes to log on to Informix. When I turn it off everything is back to normal. If I use telnet while I'm having the problem it behaves fine. My hunch is DNS but I don't know what to do to solve it. Any ideas anyone? thanks,
