onbar ism assert faliure
Posted in 2017
Juan's onbar backups on Informix 11.70.FC8 (Linux) crashed immediately with "ASSERT: file bar_unix.c line 1311" and a core file, both to an NFS-mounted ISM device and to local disk, with -b, -l and -l -c alike. Enabling BAR_DEBUG showed the crash happening inside BSAInit with signal 8 (SIGFPE, divide by zero). Andreas Legner suggested that a filesystem on the box had a block size larger than 1MB, which old ISM can't handle. Juan changed the block size and the backup then worked.

Hello:
When I lauch onbar i receive this error in onbar log ASSERT: file
bar_unix.c line 1311 - contact product support. What this error means?
I'm trying to do backup in a nfs share folder which is already create,
mounted and labelded on ism.
Thank you.

Hi,
as usual, it would be useful to get some more context: version, platform, =
command & output, some log file snippet, ...
The assertion would indicate onbar received some sort of signal from the=20
kernel it can't handle.
For ruling out nfs as a source of the problem, can you retry the same=20
without nfs involved, i.e. with ISM devices on local drives?
Andreas

Hi Juan,
now, before you'd start backing up logical logs, you'd first take at least =
a level 0 backup: onbar -b
Has this been ran already, has it worked?
Also could you try onbar -l without the -c option first? In other=20
words, is it possibly the -c option that's having the problem?
Is -b -l -c an expected usage at all ? Shouldn't it be -l -c alone?
And finally: which exact 11.7 are u on?
Andreas
Also set BAR_DEBUG_LOG in the onconfig file and set BAR_DEBUG to 5 to try
again.
Regards,
David.

Hi Andreas:
doing L0 doesn't work and has the same behavior as you can see:
2017-03-30 15:58:13 1034 1031 /opt/IBM/informix/bin/onbar_d -b
2017-03-30 15:58:13* 1034 1031 ASSERT: file bar_unix.c line 1311 -
contact product support
2017-03-30 15:58:13* 1034 1031 See also: /opt/IBM/informix/tmp/core
trying onbar -l with and without -c has the same behavior.
Using -c option is just for testing purposes in order to test onbar and ism
without overload our database. actually , we are using ontape.
Our Informix Version is IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.70.FC8

Can you find out whether one of the file systems on this box (not only the =
one where ISM would have its devices) is defined with a block size >=20
1024000 (1MB) ?
I'm afraid good old ISM isn't prepared for this and would run on a=20
division-by-zero error.
