Have you read the iBCS HINTS file? The SYSV implementations are much more sensitive to bad entries in /etc/passwd than Linux ones (and your programs will be using linked in ones). When they see a bad line they stop scanning and ignore everything following. More specifically they treat an entry without a home directory as bad...
