ASF connection name error during startup
Posted in 2026
Doug Lawry saw two 'ASF connection name @alias ... asfns.c line 600' messages at startup on 14.10.FC11W1, naming a defunct HDR secondary HA_ALIAS. Andreas Legner, Art Kagel and David Williams suggested DBPATH, sysconfig, onstat, cdr list server, oncheck reserved pages and the etc files; none contained the old alias. Doug decided to raise a case with IBM. Unresolved.

We are migrating an HDR pair to new hosts and have cloned Linux and Informix with HDR running independently between them for testing before going live. All is fine except there are two identical ignorable entries in the primary message log during startup just before or after "On-Line Mode" as below (with the actual DB server alias replaced with "alias" for confidentiality):
10:45:32 ASF connection name "@alias" errno is 0 asfcode_fileid asfns.c asfcode_line 600
10:45:32 ASF connection name "@alias" errno is 0 asfcode_fileid asfns.c asfcode_line 600I have subsequently found that this also occurs on the old primary server. The actual alias name is a defunct HDR secondary HA_ALIAS from before the previous migration. Neither $ONCONFIG or "sqlhosts" contains that alias, not any other files in $INFORMIXDIR/etc or /INFORMIXTMP, nor "onstat -g cluster" output. There is nothing obvious in the "sysha" database. Restarting with DBSERVERALIASES hashed out as an experiment has no effect, nor does restarting with "oninit -D". Does anyone have any other ideas? If not, I will raise a case with IBM.

Not sure I would expect an onstat -D to start the engine ....

Not onstat -D, Paul, oninit -D - starting the engine without replication.

DBPATH env var set? Just a quick shot in the dark... ------------------------------ Andreas Legner Informix Dev HCL Software ------------------------------
Hi Andreas.
DBPATH is not in the "informix" environment used to start "oninit" or in "onstat -g env" output.

Another shot in the dark: What does this show:
dbaccess sysmaster -
select * from sysconfig where cf_name = 'HA_ALIAS';and what is in the ONCONFIG file for HA_ALIAS?

Hi Art. Those both show the expected new value, not the old one in the error message. ------------------------------ Doug Lawry Oninit Consulting ------------------------------
Hi David.
Those "onstat" commands show the expected new HDR instance name, not the old one in the error message. ER has never been used on this system, so "cdr list server" fails:
Enterprise Replication not active (62)
command failed -- unable to connect to server specified (5)

Hi,
oncheck -cr
oncheck -pP 0 <pagenum> to dump the config reserved pages from the first 12 pages.

David.

Hi David.
I think you meant:
oncheck -pR
for i in {0..11} ; do oncheck -pP 1 $i ; doneNeither output contains the old alias name.

Hi,
ls -lart $INFORMIXDIR/etc
.infos file(s) which can be regenerated by onmode -R
I think there are .oncfg(?) file(s) in there are well
/INFORMIXTMP ( onstat -g dis to show?)
strings <filename>
these as well or just clear out for the instance and restart.
Regards,
David.

Hi David. Not in any of those. Thanks for input everyone. Will raise with IBM for them to look at "asfns.c" line 600 in 14.10.FC11W1. ------------------------------ Doug Lawry Oninit Consulting ------------------------------
