Connecting to the Informix database, my data is returned but I cannot manipulate (sort) it, and the connection is very slow or locks my machine. The error that is returned on a regular basis is: ODBC error:[INFORMIX][INTERSOLV Informix error][Informix]Cannot write sorted rows Can someone please help me? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer! Ann annsbiz@seanet.com or ann_lea@hotmail.com

"Cannot write sorted rows" means that there was insufficient temp space on the server to output temporary sort-work files. Where it is trying to write these depends alot on the values of several configuration and environment variables on the server and the client (since the connection handshaking passes several environment variables to the server for the client's session even if it is remote). PSORT_DBTEMP will dominate if it is present and lists one or more filesystems to use. DBSPACETEMP is next (from the user's environment first, the server's environment second, and the ONCONFIG file parameter last) and lists one or more dbspaces (preferrably temp dbspaces but not neccessarily) to use. Next in line should be TMPDIR and failing that either ROOTDBS or /tmp are used depending on conditions outlined in the administrator's guide. Check these out and you will find where you either have to add space or change or export an environment variable. Art S. Kagel
