installation problem
Hello ALL, I've detected something strange while installing INFORMIX (SE 5.01 and RDS 4.11) on SINIX and ULTRIX maschines!! On SINIX you can install INFORMIX-products without having a user and a group informix!!! This is the only machine, I've ever seen this. But in fact this is a problem. When you create databases which are used by many users, you need a common group, these users belong to. Otherwise you get "permission denied" errors. For example, if you create a database as user "u1" who belongs to the group "g1" you get a database directory with the follwing permissions: drw-rw---- 2 u1 g1 1024 Sep 26 14:41 db.dbs All files in this directory have the same permissions as above. Now, if you want to use this db as user "u2" who belongs to the group "g2" you cannot connect to the database, because you have no permissions in the UNIX filesystem. If you put user "u1" and user "u2" in one group, everything works fine. But this is not what I've expected. On a "normal" system like HP or Motorola, you can install INFORMIX-products only with having a user and a group called "informix". The file permissions are always 660, but the db directory and the files in this directory belong to the group "informix". So you don't have to pay attention on file-permission, because the user "informix" is able to read and write the dbs-directory and the spawned sqlexec process belongs to "informix". Why are these things so different on SINIX machines??? Till now, I've thought that SINIX is the only operating system, which can be installed this way. But now I've discovered the same behaviour on an ULTRIX machine!! Has anybody else made this experience, or do I have installed INFORMIX the wrong way (I can't believe that, because on SINIX, I've used the installation procedure, described in the manual)???
