Setting up shared memory connection

I'm using IDS 7.30.UC2 on Solaris 2.6 x86. I have an instance up and running using a tli connection. I would like to set up an alias to allow local users shared memory access. I have added another line in the sqlhosts file, and the alias and another NETTYPE in my onconfig file. Is it necessary to define another service in /etc/services for this connection method? If so, why is it necessary if the protocol in /etc/services will be defined as "tcp?" If not, what servicename do I reference in the sqlhosts file? Are there any other steps to take -- parameters which require modification -- before I reinitialize my instance? I've rtfm'ed looking for explanation of this -- or at least an example of multiple connection methods and corresponding file entries. Couldn't find it. If it's there, tell me where, too. tia

There is just one caviat: DO NOT USE THE SAME SERVICENAME AS ANY OF THE NETWORK CONNECTIONS for that server. Doing so seems to cause a poll storm using up resources. You can use an actual service name used by ANOTHER server or you can use a dummy name like: shmservice Art S. Kagel

No. The name used just needs to be unique among the olipcshm services on the local host. > If so, why is it necessary if the protocol in > /etc/services will be defined as "tcp?" Typically, I use the same name as the main oltlitcp connection, but I don't think that is necessary. > Are there any other steps to take -- > parameters which require modification -- before I reinitialize my > instance? Apart from ensuring that your system resources are adequate (/etc/system), I don't think so. > I've rtfm'ed looking for explanation of this -- or at least an > example of multiple connection methods and corresponding file > entries. Couldn't find it. If it's there, tell me where, too. Sometime earlier this year I posted my sqlhosts file -- shortly before the disk got trashed. Try DejaNews (http://www.deja.com). Hmm, I'm not sure what to suggest as a way of reducing the number of postings. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
