This is a very dangerous thing to ask. Note that in this case when the
machine came up it would start writing over your previous logical log
tape -- not exactly what most people want to happen when their engine crashes.
If onsite support is out of the question, I'd rather log one iteration to
/dev/null if a crash happens rather than overwriting the log tape... but
thats really not a solution either.
Informix won't support logical logging in the background for this very
reason. Unless you have a tape carousel, you only want to start logging
once you've changed the tape. A script to run `ontape -c` and press enter
when asked for a tape, but that is run manually, is about the closest I'd
suggest to automating (I'm guessing that if you can't spare a terminal that
you don't have a carousel).
Having said that, and after pointing out that we run continuous logging at
most of our production sites, I should say that its never really helped us.
Not once have we used it as part of a restoration process, and its caused
us a lot of headaches with people not pushing <ENTER>, et cetera. Since it
won't help us except in very rare instances, we're informally wondering whether
or not to remain with it -- has anyone else come to this conclusion?
I should say that we're running both 5 and 7 engines, with HW mirroring on
a variety of platforms.
